LEWISTOWN, Pa. – One team remained unbeaten while another picked up its first victory of the season as the Midget division of the Central Keystone Youth Football & Cheer League (CKYFCL) took to the gridiron on Wednesday evening.
Derry-Decatur 21 – Kish-South 6
REEDSVILLE, Pa. – Kish-South struck first but Derry-Decatur stormed back over the final three quarters of play en route to earning its their first victory of the season by a 21-6 margin on Wednesday evening.
The victory for Derry-Decatur avenged an early-season 12-7 home loss at the hands of the Indians.
Kish-South owned a 6-0 lead after a quarter of play before Derry-Decatur got on the board in a busy second quarter.
Derry-Decatur scored twice in the frame on a pair of Easton Smith scores to take a 13-6 lead to the locker room.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Derry-Decatur added some breathing room with another score from the legs of Smith and the Cyclones added a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to pick up a hard-fought 21-6 win.
Derry-Decatur is back in action on Sunday when it hosts unbeaten Kish-North. Kickoff against the Indians is set for 3:00 p.m. Kish-South returns to action on Wednesday, October 1 when it hosts Juniata for a 5:30 p.m. showdown with the Indians.
Kish-North 12 – McVeytown 0
MCVEYTOWN, Pa. – A midweek slugfest between the top teams in the division saw Kish-North break a scoreless deadlock in the second quarter en route to a hard-fought 12-0 victory over the McVeytown Eagles on Wednesday evening.
The victory moves Kish-North to a 2 1/2 game lead in the Midget division with five games remaining on the slate and provides an all-important tiebreaker advantage by sweeping the season series with McVeytown.
Kish-North won the toss and elected to receive and turned in a promising drive to open the contest. After moving the ball deep into McVeytown territory, the Eagles picked off a Kish-north pass to thwart the early Kish-North surge.
McVeytown returned the favor on their first possession of the contest but another defensive stand, this time from Kish-North forced an Eagles punt as the game remained scoreless after the first stanza.
Following the scoreless first quarter of action, Kish-North broke the deadlock late in the first half when Duke Peachey found daylight around the right side of the line. Peachey sprinted to the end zone to build a 6-0 Indians lead at the intermission.
McVeytown took the ball after halftime and tried to mount a game-tying drive but were thwarted again by a stingy Kish-North defense.
Kish-North added some breathing room early in the fourth quarter following a Jase Atherton interception to set the Indians up with good field position. Peachey connected with Wyatt Hassinger on a long pass to move into the red zone before connecting with Atherton on a five-yard strike to extend the Kish-North lead to 12-0 after three quarter of action.
McVeytown was looking to get on the scoreboard late in the game, but Hassinger delivered for the Kish-North defense with an interception to seal a 12-0 victory for the Indians.
The victory was the fourth shutout victory of the season for division-leading Kish-North.
Kish-North is back in action on Sunday, Septmber 28 when it puts its unblemished record on the line in a 3:00 p.m. showdown at Derry-Decatur. McVeytown will look to get back on track on Sunday, September 28 when it hosts Terrace. Kickoff against the Tigers is set for 3:00 p.m.
